1st grade Tar Beach
I just love the imaginative story of Cassie Lightfoot in Tar Beach. Flying over her special place gave the first graders a prompt to think about their favorite place or memory. We talked about the author and illustrator, Faith Ringgold, and how she is credited with creating the art form of story quilts. These are (usually) large quilts that have painting and writing on them. The students used their imagination and memory to depict themselves flying over a special place. They added patterned paper to create a border that represented the quilt blocks. Lastly, most added words to their story quilt to describe their artwork. I loved getting to know them more by their stories! Amazing job, lovely students.
