The first graders and I discussed the art of German-born artist, Wolf Kahn. You can check out his work here: http://www.wolfkahn.com/
He mainly paints landscapes. This was a great opportunity to talk about abstract art and all the important parts of a landscape. The first graders divided their paper to show the foreground, middle ground and back ground areas. They used cool or warm water colors to paint their sky / ground. They even added the magic pinch of salt to create an interesting watercolor effect. After taking off the tape, which we used as a mask for our trees, the students colored and painted the trees. Spectacular artwork!
