Henri Matisse is a great artist to study while teaching shapes (organic and geometric) and space (positive and negative). The book, Henri's Scissors, is awesome and informative. The students had great fun discussing his work and the possible meaning behind each piece. They also really liked (and retained) the information about his personal history - hospitalized at a young age, started painting, got to old to paint so he turned to using scissors. I showed this clip from the Tate Museum. To talk about space, this is my favorite tiny clip to show. I love how different these turned out. Congrats, second graders!
