Wolf Kahn (check out his webpage by clicking here.) is a very interesting landscape painter. He has quite a proficient body of work and continues to paint and create pastel works to this day.
To get the artwork started, we discussed how to mask off parts of the paper using masking tape. This was fun! Some of the students choose incredibly detailed trees with limbs and branches going off in all directions. Other students opted for a more simplified landscape.
The first graders and I discussed his use of color. We chose to use either cool colors for the foreground/middle ground/ background and then warm for the sky or vice versa. The line where the sky meets the ground is called the horizon line.
