Fifth grade clay face jugs

I love teaching this project because I think there are valuable lessons to learn.  I'm always reminded of the quote from George Santayana, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."  Fifth grades is a wonderful grade for great discussion and even more relevant to them because they have studied slavery.  We discuss our feelings after watching a short, but awesome, PBS documentary about slaves from the Congo coming over to South Carolina AFTER slavery was illeagle in the United States.  All of this is the historical part for why face jugs are so important. The art part is that the students could create a historical face jug or a more contemporary one (funny, pretty...).  Here are some of the great creations:
